There’s a lot news with the state House District 18 this
year. First and foremost is the district itself. Thanks to a legal case
that made it all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court, the district no
longer straddles two counties but encompasses just northern New Hanover
County. Also new come November will be the person representing the
revamped district.
Local Democrat seeking the seat is Susi Hamilton, the former
Wilmington planner and executive director of Wilmington Downtown Inc.
Hamilton says she sees her experience working with government agencies
and officials as a plus, noting that she wouldn’t require a lot of
on-the-job training. “I understand the laws, the statutes,” she said. “I
understand where to look to get something accomplished.” As a
small-business owner, Hamilton said she also knows the importance of
watching her pennies, something she would bring to tackling the state’s
budget woes.

PRESS RELEASE
SEASONED CIVIC AND BUSINESS LEADER TO RUN FOR
HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES
One of Wilmington’s most prominent and active community
leaders filed today for the North Carolina House of Representatives,
District 18, which covers several areas from Castle Hayne to Downtown
Wilmington, and Greenfield Lake to Forest Hills.
Susi Hamilton, who filed her intent to run this morning, has over 12
years experience in local and state government including non-profit
management for Wilmington’s Downtown Inc. planning and economic
development. During that time she participated in bringing jobs to
District 18 including the relocation of PPD’s corporate headquarters,
expanding a low interest loan program in the downtown and northside
areas of our city and supporting the development of a convention center.
“Having grown up in Wilmington I have not only witnessed the growth and
improvements throughout the years, but also participated in shaping the
future of our community”, said Hamilton. “As a Downtown resident I have
a passion for our community’s history and traditions, but also know that
we are in the midst of a renaissance that requires strong leadership in
economic development, job creation, creation of affordable housing
opportunities and sustainable growth.”
Hamilton spent the past two years in the private sector as a business
development leader for the construction industry with focus on
thoughtful planning and infrastructure development for the tri-county
area.
She currently runs her own consulting firm with expertise in planned
growth and economic stimulus for the area with projects such as the
launch of the new White Space Technology testing currently taking place
in Wilmington, the first of its kind in the world. The technology will
ultimately provide wireless access to rural communities in our area and
provide significant savings to tax payers for public safety, healthcare
and water management services.
“Susi’s vast experience in the public, private and non-profit sectors
make her the ideal candidate for this district”, said Jonathan Barfield,
Jr., Vice Chair, New Hanover County Commissioners. “She has been a
driving force for thoughtful planning and growth in our community for
years and possesses the skill and knowledge necessary to carry us into
the
future.”
Hamilton graduated from Chapel Hill in 1994 and went on to complete her
MBA at UNCW, graduating top of her class in 2004. She was awarded the
prestigious Presidential Management Fellowship that same year.
Susi currently lives with her husband Steve and their six-year-old
daughter in one of Downtown Wilmington’s historic homes.

Five for Friday: 11th-Hour Candidates Race to File
Their Candidacy
A flurry of candidates filed their intentions to run for
public office on the last morning of the filing period Friday.
Five hopefuls threw their name into various hats this morning including
former New Hanover County Sheriff Sid Causey, who will be running for
County Commission as a Democrat. Another Democrat, Tom Gale, also filed
Friday morning before the noon deadline. They add their names
to the two Democrats and seven Republicans who had already filed. Causey
did not make his decision to run until 11 a.m. today. “I called my wife
and pastor and they encouraged me, so I filed,” Causey said.
He has been approached about running since he retired as the county’s
sheriff in 2009. But he hadn’t thought about it much until recently. “A
good friend called and we spoke about it last night. I didn’t intend to
run before [today]. There was no strategy,” Causey said.
Two names popped up in the race for the N.C. House 18th District this
morning, too. Former Wilmington Downtown Inc. executive director Susi
Hamilton, a Democrat, and business owner.
J. Michael Hutson, a Republican, both filed on Friday morning. They will
take on Republican Beth Dawson and Democrat James L. Utley Jr. for the
house seat being vacated by Sandra Spaulding Hughes.
“I wanted to make sure my family was fully in support,” Hamilton said of
her last-minute filing. “We needed a candidate from committed to serving
the citizens of New Hanover County.”
In the board of education race, Republican Laura Parks added her name to
a list of 12 candidates including four who filed on Thursday, the
penultimate filing day.
